Frequently Asked Questions

What is a "teaching clinic"?

The Dental Clinic is part of the Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health, one of five schools at A.T. Still University. Your dental care is provided by dental teams led by faculty dentists at the Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health. Our faculty dentists teach at the Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health and are dental experts. In addition to hygienists and other support staff, teams include student doctors who are preparing for a career in dentistry at the Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health. The education our student doctors receive is invaluable and includes hundreds of hours of training and practice on human simulators. Because of our expert faculty and state-of-the-art clinic, students receive a dental education second-to-none anywhere in the U.S. Our student doctors are among the most clinically prepared and advanced dental graduates nationwide. All this makes our patient experience, and range of treatments and services, a model dental education system nationally recognized for its excellence.

Will I be cared for by a "real" dentist?

Yes. Faculty supervisors at the Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health dental clinic have a D.D.S., D.M.D. degree or equivalent, the national standard for the practice of dentistry. Student doctors, work under the close supervision of faculty members with care being provided by the student doctor with assistance from staff hygienists, dental assistants and other staff.

Do you take my insurance plan?

Our insurance coordinator will assist you in completing your insurance claim so you get reimbursed for dental services directly from your insurance carrier. The Clinic does not currently accept assignment of insurance benefits for any of the dental insurance plans offered in the area. However, we are working with carriers to become network providers so that we will be able to accept insurance assignments in the near future.

How often should I see a dentist?

The frequency of your dental visits depends on your dental needs and will be determined by your dentist. Regular dental visits are vital to your oral health and help you maintain a healthy smile.

What should I expect at my first appointment?

Your first visit to our clinic will probably be an initial screening appointment to assess what treatment you need. The initial screening examination allows us to discover and document your oral health status, and in subsequent appointments, tailor your care to your specific needs. We also begin a file to track your needs and treatments.

If you are experiencing pain and/or having a dental emergency, we will address your specific emergency.

How much are your fees?

Because we are university-affiliated, our fees are very reasonable. Everyone is welcome at our clinics, and there are no income qualifications necessary to take advantage of our services.

Specific fees for dental services will be explained to you before you receive treatment.
